The intention in this downtown Toronto condo was to create urban serenity, in a soft and sophisticated interior. LUX Design’s client, a busy young professional, was seeking a space where she could escape the chaos of life and enter a world of relaxation and tranquility. Inspiration for the colour palette was drawn from an existing detail that the client loved in her space, the kitchen backsplash tile. This beautiful, subdued watery blue glass tile was the inspiration for the overall colour palette and mood in the space. Throughout the interior, the same muted tones of aqua blues paired with cool grays blend together to inspire tranquility. The interior was designed to mimic the feel and look of water: fresh, reflective and light.
 

 
Throughout the space, modern furniture pieces are infused with classic design details to create depth and sophistication. A traditional damask wallpaper with a modern metallic twist immediately captures the eye, and classic Louis XIV chairs done in a clear acrylic maintain a traditional shape with a modern look. The modern leather and chrome sofa featuring classic button tufting set against the stunning wallpaper creates a statement without being overpowering.  Cool metallic accents were selected, including a metal coffee table paired with a silver and gray shag rug, and metallic accent pillows. These items work to reflect light in the space and play well with the cool aqua tones of the wallpaper and accessories. Despite the richness of the existing ebony floor, the colours and textures used in the space maintain a fresh and bright feeling throughout. Soft whites and layered neutrals were chosen for the main furniture pieces, and this allows the soft aqua tones to really echo throughout the space. Small touches of dark grey and black in the accessories creates contrast and visual interest amongst the light colour palette.
 

 

 
The biggest challenge faced in completing this condo was size, like many downtown condos square footage was limited. The main living area features an angled wall which cuts into the livable space. Careful space planning and the use of properly scaled furniture allow this living area to feel open and airy, despite its odd shape.  Soft white sheers were also used to diffuse light and soften the sharp angled wall.  Because of space constraints in the main living area, another challenge was to create a comfortable living space that included a dining area as well. This was accomplished through the use of a simple glass and chrome table along with clear acrylic ghost chairs which, when placed together, are visually light and create a sense of open space.
